After being the runner-up the previous two years, the 2nd Maintenance Squadron won the intramural softball championship here when they defeated the Air Force Global Strike Command softball team 13-9 July 21.

“There were nerves all day because we didn’t want to fall into the same position as last year,” said David Demarest, 2nd MXS first baseman.

AFGSC held a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but their lead was short lived. The 2nd MXS took a 7-2 lead during the 2nd inning and never looked back.

AFGSC kept chipping away at the lead by scoring two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, including a two-run homerun by Christopher Sage.

After scoring a total of three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings combined, 2nd MXS held a 10-8 lead going into the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, AFGSC rallied to score a run, but left the tying run on third base. They trailed 10-9.

But in the bottom of the 6th, Matt Lachney, 2nd MXS pitcher, blasted a homerun to left-center field, giving 2nd MXS a 12-9 lead, which became 13-9 by the end of the inning.

In the final inning, AFGSC didn’t score a single run, leaving the score 13-9 and the 2nd MXS softball team the victor.

“When the final ball went into his glove, it was just release,” said Dermarest. “Finally, it is a load off.”

Third time is the charm, the 2nd MXS softball team went undefeated in the double elimination postseason tournament.

“It’s a good feeling,” said Jeremy Cato, 2nd MXS shortstop. “We were here three years in a row, and we finally won it. I had no doubt in my team, they’re a great group of guys.”
