What is BAFB School of Choice (K-12)?

Active duty residents who live on base with school age children now have the option to send their child to any school in Bossier Parish up to the school’s functional capacity.

 

How does school of choice work?

Barksdale Air Force Base (BAFB) resident school of choice (K-12) forms for active duty military families living on the base are available for pickup on 3 May 2021.  The forms are available at the Bossier School Board Annex II or at the School Liaison office located at 241 Curtiss Rd in the River’s Edge Welcome Center. Please call Jacqueline Robertson, School Liaison Program Manager at (318) 456-4098 or cell (318) 564-9099. Please pick up and complete the applications and bring them along with a military ID, proof of residence, and a copy of your lease for approval to:

If student is transitioning from one school level (elementary to middle, middle to high) a new application must be submitted with appropriate documentation:

• Proof of residence (housing letter or copy of lease)
• Military I.D.
• Parent/student must provide own transportation

Will transportation be provided to school of choice students?
Parents are required to provide transportation for schools outside of their zoned schools.

Will school of choice be available for incoming personnel after school has started?
Yes!

 If the first school we select does not work for us could we transfer to another school outside of the district?
Once registered at the School of Choice, no transfer can be made to any other Bossier Parish School other than the school in the student’s designated attendance zone.  School of Choice enrollment is approved for an entire school level (elementary, middle and high school).

 

What does school of choice mean for my high school athlete?
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) eligibility requirements are not governed by the Bossier Parish School Board.  All high school athletic eligibility issues will be determined by the LHSAA.

The Bossier Parish School System offers a wide variety of programs that are destined to provide quality education, which will equip all students to function at their highest potential in a complex and changing society. Opportunities for services are provided to students beginning at the preschool level (age 3-5) and continuing through the age of 21.

Placement and services flow from the needs of the students identified through a referral process that includes a multidisciplinary evaluation (MDE) which provides the foundation for the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) prior to making a placement decision for participation in one or more of the Special Education programs.

What is CLIP?

College Life Is Possible, or CLIP, is a collaborative partnership between the Bossier Parish School System and Bossier Parish Community College.  CLIP is designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities who have completed 4 years of high school. The program is located on BPCC’s campus presenting students with an opportunity to be educated in a college environment alongside their peers. The goal of CLIP is to prepare students for independent living and employment.

The educational environment in CLIP raises the standards of expectations to one similar to that of their peers. Students spend a portion of their day engaged in challenging academic curriculum that addresses self determination skills such as goal setting, decision making, and problem solving. The CLIP curriculum also addresses independent life skills such as money management and social skills. Finally, employability skills related to interviews, filling out job applications, and career awareness are addressed.

Another portion of a CLIP student’s day is spent in a community vocational internship.  CLIP is currently partnered with several businesses in the Bossier area including Willis Knighton Hospital and Red River Sanitors at The Louisiana Boardwalk.  CLIP offers students a wide variety of opportunities in numerous career areas for different job experiences.

The Bossier Parish School Board may permit out-of-district transfers for school attendance for the following reasons:

Majority to Minority – A student who belongs to the majority race in the neighborhood school may request a transfer to a school where he/she will be a minority.

Child tending (grades K-6 only) – both parents/guardians must work full-time outside the home and child tending must be full-time for students in grades K-6.  (Y.E.P. will not be considered a child tender for out-of-district transfer.)

Bossier Parish School Board employee privilege – the requested school must be the primary place of employment or a feeder school in the same attendance district.

Family hardship – family hardship is an event or circumstance that places a student in jeopardy physically, mentally or academically.  A student’s after-school work, a childcare concern, or participation in school co-curricular or extracurricular activities shall not be considered as family hardships.

Medical reasons – A letter from a physician (M.D.) is required, stating the specific medical diagnosis, length of time the student has been seen by the physician, date of last physician’s visit for    the problem and the specific reason(s) why the student cannot attend his/her neighborhood school.

Senior privilege – Senior privilege applies only to continued attendance at the school where the student completed the junior year.

Intervention – Intervention is a special transfer that requires a recommendation from appropriate school/district officials.

Out-of-district transfer applications must be submitted to the Supervisor of Special Programs for approval, and approval must be granted prior to enrollment.  You must contact the Bossier Parish School Board Students Services for all registration forms.  All registration forms are maintained at Student Services located in the Bossier Parish School Board Annex II located adjacent to the School Board Office in Benton, LA.  For additional information, please email Yolanda Jefferson (yolanda.jefferson@bossierschools.org) or call (318) 549-5037 Bossier Parish Schools, to complete the appropriate forms.  Please read all forms and handbooks to ensure continued compliance.  In order to determine the cumulative effect of transfers, the Bossier Parish School Board requires all transfers to be submitted by the third (3rd) Monday in July, with the exception of majority to minority transfers.  Majority to minority applications shall be submitted by the last student attendance day of the school year.  Only bona fide emergency transfers shall be considered after that date.  Transportation shall not be provided for out-of-district transfer students except for reason #1.

INCOMING STUDENTS WITH IEP

Please read as this may pose some delay regarding your child receiving services.

Bossier Parish Schools: 

If your child has an IEP from another state you will need to take the IEP and the testing records to the Bossier Parish School Board Evaluation Center.

The Evaluation Center is a division of the Bossier Parish School Board which houses the special education department.  

Your child’s information will be reviewed to determine services.

If you do not have your child’s IEP nor testing documents you will be able to fill out a request for those to be sent to the center.

What is the Caddo Parish Schools Registration Process?

Caddo knows that schools are a primary concern as you make decisions about changing your residence. They encourage you to visit their schools to see their comprehensive instructional program in operation. Please call the principal of the school in which you are interested in arranging a visit with.

 

How do I learn which school my children will attend?

Use the School Directory on the caddoschools.org website to search for schools based on your new address.

When should I register my child?

Schools are open throughout the summer to accommodate parents in the registration process. The early registration of students provides the school system an opportunity to evaluate student placement and adjust staffing in response to unanticipated enrollment increases. Parents should contact their local school to schedule an enrollment appointment.

 

What information do I need to register a child?

• Proof of Caddo Parish residency (Deed or lease and photo ID with 2 proofs of residency)
• Certificate of birth
• Immunization record
• Copy of the child's most recent report card (if applicable)

If the student is transferring from another public school in Louisiana, a copy of the Louisiana Student Transfer Record will be required. This form may be obtained at the school from which the student is transferring. Most importantly, contact the appropriate school prior to registration. Schools are open throughout the summer to accommodate parents during the registration process.

CADDO PARISH MAGNET SCHOOLS

Parents of children who will be in grades 6th through 8th that are  interested in enrolling their children in Caddo Parish Magnet Schools will need to contact Mrs. Melinda Kay to determine eligibility requirements.  Testing for the magnet programs for grades 6th – 8th can be arranged by contacting Mrs. Kay at MKAY@caddoschools.org or call (318) 603-6382.

Parents whose children will be in grades K5 through 5th that are interested in enrolling their children in Caddo Parish Magnet Schools will need to contact Ms. Julie Scruggs to determine eligibility requirements.  Testing for the magnet programs for grades K5 – 5th can be arranged by contacting Ms. Scruggs at JSCRUGGS@caddoschools.org or call (318) 603-6504.  Parents interested in enrolling in a school specializing in a foreign language may contact Ms. Scruggs.

 Parents of high school children interested in enrolling in a Caddo Parish Magnet School will need to make direct contact with that school.  You may want to inform the magnet school coordinators of your military status.
