FTAC offers keys to new doors Published Nov. 22, 2016 By Airman Alexis C. Schultz 2nd Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Airmen assimilating to their first base may become stressed and have a hard time focusing at work because they’re integrating into a new way of life. The First Term Airman Center is designed to transition new Airmen from a training environment to the operational Air Force using the Airman’s skills, knowledge and training gained from technical school. FTAC teaches Airmen what resources are available at the base and helps them start their new careers on the right foot. “With all the hustle in Basic Military Training and constant studying in technical school, this is really the first time we make them slow down to realize everything that is offered to them,” said Staff Sgt. Shae Steward, 2nd Force Support Squadron FTAC team lead. Throughout the five day course, Airmen receive briefings from different organizations like Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, Airman and Family Readiness Center, Equal Opportunity and many more. These briefings are designed to educate Airmen on the many programs and helping agencies available to them. “The course helped me understand the priority of my mission at Barksdale,” said Airman 1st Class Shane McCarthy, 608th Air Operations Center. Steward says resiliency is crucial to becoming a successful and inspiring Airman. FTAC assists in making sure Airmen know the rules, the Air Force Instructions and guidelines set out before them. “FTAC reminds me of my purpose on base,” said McCarthy. “There are always opportunities to grow, and help is available if you’re ever in need.” For more information, contact the FTAC coordinator at 456-9099.
