The monthly 5K Run for Love was held at the ALS gym to allow Airmen to see the progress that has been made to the gym thus far on Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Feb. 14.

"The [fitness center] is a great facility, but it is just too small," said Col. Andrew Gebara, 2nd Bomb Wing commander. "The new ALS gym will have various types of workout equipment to include treadmills and stationary bikes, kettle bells and free-weights."

Various other renovations are being made to the gym which will make it a fully functioning gym.

"Some things being done to the gym include a new front office, bathrooms and air conditioning system," said William Grimes, 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron deputy chief operations flight. "We also knocked down a wall giving easier access to the main gym."

The new gym will provide an alternate workout location for residents living or working on the East Reservation.

"This gym will eliminate the need for East Reservation residents to drive all the way to main base in order to work out," said Maj. Erik Tarnanen, 2nd Bomb Wing Plans, Programs and Exercises. "This is the main goal we are aiming for."

As part of the Air Force promoting a healthy and fit lifestyle, monthly wing runs are held by the 2nd Force Support Squadron.

This monthly fun run was held at the gym to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage couples to come out and get fit together.

"It was fantastic to be able to run together as a couple, said Capt. Ryan Walton, Air Force Global Strike Command chief of modeling and simulation. "Normally we do these runs separately, but running with my wife was a lot of fun. We pushed each other and helped each other cross the finish line."
