Speak up, speak out to prevent sexual assault

What if someone could say one phrase or take one action and sexual assaults would be reduced?  Would you participate in a program like that?

The reality is that by speaking out when someone makes an inappropriate comment or engages in an inappropriate behavior, you are making an impact on creating an environment where sexual assault is less likely to occur.

The same is true when a person speaks up and defends someone from a harassing comment or gesture.  These actions place potential offenders on notice that those behaviors are unwelcomed in the Air Force community.

We are a professional force, and the vast majority of individuals have incorporated respect and dignity into their everyday lives. These qualities are either modeled by parents, mentors or learned independently through self-study. Unfortunately, some behaviors are not changed by knowledge alone.

Lasting change sometimes happens when an event occurs that challenges someone and a need to alter the status quo becomes real, but why wait for a tragedy such as a sister or brother being sexually assaulted to motivate you to change?  Altering behaviors can be difficult, but worthwhile.

As you begin to act on those New Year's resolutions, such as substituting soda with water for a healthier body, consider making a positive change for a healthier workplace.  Regardless of the situation, on or off-duty, watch out for one another and don't be afraid to speak up and speak out.
