    2nd OG Change of Command

    The 2nd Operations Group welcomed a new commander during a change of command ceremony at Barksdale, July 2, 2020. With their masks donned, audience members watched as Col. Matthew McDaniel assumed command from Col. David Gordon. Col. Michael Miller, 2nd Bomb Wing commander, officiated the ceremony and led the symbolic change of leadership by the passing of the 2nd OG guidon from the outgoing commander to the incoming.

    Barksdale houses the largest fuel storage capacity in all of Air Force Global Strike Command, which not only keeps the B-52H Stratofortress in the air, but also keeps the rest of the 2nd Bomb Wing moving.

    AFE face-off with COVID by making masks

    As Barksdale’s health protection measures increased in response to COVID-19, face masks are now required to be worn inside the base exchange, commissary and other base facilities. With Airmen being restricted to shop only on base, the need for face masks has increased.

    With the responsibility of training the next generation of warfighters, the 11th Bomb Squadron is entrusted with preparing new B-52H Stratofortress aircrew to face any and every adversary. So, it’s fitting that the 11th BS is continuing it’s training in the face of the current global pandemic, COVID-19.

    Since the early 1930’s, Barksdale has persistently progressed from its humble beginnings as a cotton field in the middle of Northwestern Louisiana, to its current embodiment as the nerve center of the nation’s deterrent force. Barksdale Airmen take care of the mission, but who takes care of the base? The unit responsible for the sustainment and maintenance of $5.9 billion worth of infrastructure on the installation is the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron operations flight.

    2nd BW Airmen step up to help commissary workers

    It’s an Air Force core value to place service before self and at Barksdale you don’t have to look very far to see that value in action. In the wake of Barksdale’s public health emergency, Airmen from the 2nd Bomb Wing have stepped up to assist commissary workers in efforts to keep the store stocked and sanitized.

    Where every sortie begins and ends

    Barksdale is home to the more than 65-year-old backbone of the United States’ strategic bomber force, the B-52H Stratofortress. There are numerous components that all work together to ensure this aircraft can take flight at any given time, but one office in particular is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the B-52s have a safe place to land and take off. This office is the 2nd Operations Support Squadron airfield management office, who work day in and day out to provide the 2nd Bomb Wing with a reliable, capable and competent airfield environment.
