For those not familiar with the superhero world, the Flash is considered “the fastest man alive”. He was gifted with super speed after being struck by lightning combined with just the right mix of chemicals. Yet even as “the fastest man alive” Flash recognizes the need for us, not just to move, but to move toward something. What is our goal? What is our destination?
As military members and even retirees we are accustomed to constantly moving. Some of us may even anticipate it. We get restless in one place or one assignment for too long and anticipate moving on to something else. There is nothing wrong with the desire to move. The questions for us to reflect on this week are what are we running from and what are we running to? Are we seeking to escape something? Some supervisor, subordinate, assignment or base? Are we running from some particular feeling or experience? First, we must face what we are running from before we can identify what we’re running to.
The second question, what are we running to, is about goals and aspirations. These goals don’t just have to be career oriented. They can and should be personal, familial and relational. The challenge for us this week is to look inward and identify the things we run from, and also identify what we are running to. We are running towards something. Be conscious of what it is.
