BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- An Airman assigned to the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron was pronounced deceased by medical officials at LSUS Health Science Center at approximately 2 p.m. Jan 7.
Senior Airman Eli Cook, a B-52H Stratofortress assistant dedicated crew chief, succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicular accident that occurred Jan. 2 in Shreveport, La.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eli, and our hearts go out to his family and friends in this difficult time,” said Col. Kristin E. Goodwin, 2nd Bomb Wing commander.
Barksdale Air Force Base was Airman Cook’s first duty station upon entering the U.S. Air Force and completing technical training. He directly supported the 11th Bomb Squadron Aircraft Maintenance Unit and was known as a leader among his peers, according to Lt Col Michael Hammack, 2d AMXS commander.
A private memorial service will be held on Barksdale. In addition to the memorial service, base mental and spiritual health professionals are working with those affected by the loss of a member of the 2nd Bomb Wing team.
As with all mishaps involving U.S. Air Force personnel, the incident is under investigation. Out of respect for the Cook and 2nd Bomb Wing family, the memorial service scheduled for Jan. 8 on base will be closed to media.
