Bomber History

BARKSDALE AFB, La -- Master Sgt Keith Baron, a dedicated crew chief at the 8th Air Force Museum , inspects a 24 foot C-47 aileron that is inside the bay of the C-47 on May 8. With renovations being made to the museum, and the addition of a restoration room that will provide infrastructure needed to properly maintain and preserve the museum's aircraft, the future of the facility is bright. Dedicated in 1979, the 8th Air Force Museum is one of only twelve Air Force Field Museums in the country. Home to 28 aircraft, 120 displays, and 300 linear feet of archival material. The museum is visited by more than 50,000 visitors annually. With a full-time staff of five (three active duty personnel and two civilians) , and devoted volunteers from Barksdale and the local community , the rich history of the 8th Air Force, the 2d Bomb Wing, and the prominent role of Air Force Aviation is being preserved.
