Keeping it green

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Calvin Adkins, Fox Run golf course maintenance crew member, uses a specialized mower called a verticutter to remove thatch from one of the greens Aug. 25. Thatch is a layer of material that builds up between the grass and the soil and if not removed can prevent moisture and nutrients from reaching the roots.
