The 2nd Medical Group laboratory received a surprise inspection by two members from the College of American Pathologists, here, September 14.

At the end of the inspection, the results showed the lab had accomplished something very few labs have ever accomplished before, a final report with no deficiencies.

“It’s one of the better accolades we can get,” said Tech. Sgt. Daniel Roman, 2nd Medical Support Squadron laboratory service flight chief. “It shows the quality we are providing.”

Every two years, inspectors from CAP go to medical labs around the country to check the quality of civilian and military labs. Their job is to inspect the labs to make sure they meet the standards set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988, a mandate that sets medical labs compliance requirements.

CAP gives a checklist to each lab they inspect that catalogs everything the lab should be compliant with according to the CLIA. The list includes items involving training, safety and quality control programs.

Very few labs have zero deficiencies, it is an accomplishment that means a lot to the members of the laboratory.

“I was very excited,” said Rebecca Harris, 2nd MDSS quality assurance coordinator. “That’s teamwork right there. It’s not just me, it’s the whole lab coming together. I’m very proud of everyone.”
