Sept. 18, a proud date for Airmen, America Published Sept. 12, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Jason McCasland 2nd Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- September 1947 brought many historical events to American history. The first jet propelled fighter was successfully tested, Jackie Robinson was named rookie of the year, the first helicopter airmail and express service happened in California, John Cobb set an automotive speed record of 394.2 mph, James Forrestal was sworn in as the first United States Secretary of Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency was created and much more. For Airmen all over the world, 1947 marked the birth of the United States Air Force. Although aircraft have played a vital role in many of the U.S. encounters, 1947 was the official beginning for a young branch to shine. In 1948 the Air Force demonstrated its value and worth to the military by participating in the BERLIN AIRLIFT and its execution of moving more than 2.3 million tons of supplies to Berlin. Later, in 1950's, the Air Force aided in the Korean War by airlifting the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Teams. This act was the foreshadowing of what the Air Force could, and would, do in later engagements. During the 1960's, the Air Force had more than 58,000 personnel in Vietnam performing various duties from air support to construction. In 1972, for the second time in its history, the Air Force showed the American public the importance of air power by launching OPERATION LINEBACKER. This operation compelled North Vietnam to sign a peace treaty in early 1973. Once again in the 1990's, the Air Force climbed higher by supporting OPERATION DESERT STORM and OPERATION DESERT SHIELD. The Air Force delivered an arsenal of precision guided munitions and air power that brought about the liberation of Kuwait. Today, more than 66 years later, the Air Force continues its support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and remains ready and vigilant in its support of global vision, reach and power. With the Air Force's 66th birthday Sept. 18, Barksdale will celebrate with a birthday ball Sept. 14.
