How many people have made New Year's resolutions to lose weight, get fit, eat right and so on? There is one challenge many Airmen haven't thought of for the new year.

The Iron Airman challenge consists of four events that must be completed within 30 minutes: push-ups, sit-ups, two mile run, and pull-ups for a maximum score of 400 points.

"We've had about 45 people try to become an Iron Airmen," said Maj. Warren Carroll, 2nd Bomb Wing Commander Action Group. "So far only 16 have made it to the board of Iron Airman names at the gym."

Iron Airman, which began in 2012, was partially derived from joining some of the different military services most challenging physical training standards. For example, a perfect 400 would require a male under 30 to complete 21 pull-ups, 91 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and a two-mile run in 12 minutes and 16 seconds for a minimum score of 360 points.

Out of the 16 Iron Airmen, Capt. William Graff, 20th Bomb Squadron commander support staff flight commander, is the only one has achieved the perfect score.

The 31 year old, ran two miles in 12:54, pumped out 21 pull-ups, 91 push-ups and 100 sit-ups, said the challenge was like a supercharged PT test.

The challenge takes dedication and hard work to become a member of the elite fit club.

"The kind of person who's going to succeed is one who has already excelled on the PT test. If you train for Iron Airman, you will also be training to excel on the PT test," said Carroll, the first Iron Airman.

Those who complete the Iron Airman challenge receive recognition from the 2nd Bomb Wing commander, have their name on the Iron Airman Achievement Board and receive a trophy.
