Airman's attic reopens Published Feb. 8, 2008 By Senior Airman Alyssa Miles 2d Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Barksdale's Airman's Attic and Loan Locker have reopened from 2-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the former Franks Sub Shop located next to the Stripes Lounge here. Both services were closed in November 2007 after being run by the Airman and Family Readiness Center for seven years. "The Airman and Family Readiness Center is merging with 2d Services Squadron, and we were guided to stop services that were not mandated by the Air Force Instruction," said Theresa Marvin, A&FRC director. "However, the 2d Mission Support Group commander and command chief master sergeant put word out that this something they wanted to continue providing for people wearing the uniform. The services are being continued thanks to volunteers." The Airman's Attic offers used clothing, uniforms, household goods, shoes and toys for children to E-4s and below for no cost. The locker loans household goods, some kitchen items and floor mats to any servicemember who has recently moved to Barksdale and is waiting on the arrival of their household items. "It took a while to find a new facility," said Master Sgt. Cheri Hibbs, support section chief. "Senior Master Sgt. Zefrem Smith and I located a new home, and the relocation began. We cleaned and painted the new facility and moved the items in from the old location." Word of the reopening spread throughout the base rather quickly. "I received calls on a daily basis during relocation asking when the Airman's Attic was going to reopen," Sergeant Hibbs said. "It reopened right before the holidays and everyone who has stopped by is happy with the new location. They can park next to the entrance and not have to worry about crossing a street with items and children in 'tow.'" According to Sergeant Hibbs, there has been a lot of excitement over the reopening of the attic and locker. However, help is needed from Barksdale residents to ensure these services remain available to base Airmen. "In order for the Airman's Attic and Loan Locker to stay open we need people to donate items and to give some of their time to volunteer at the Attic," Sergeant Hibbs said. Donations can be dropped off during hours of operation. For more information, or to volunteer, call Sergeant Hibbs or Airman Piatt at 456-1008.
