Wing Promotes Fit to Fight with Sports Day Published May 30, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Joanna M. Kresge 2d Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Members of the 2d Bomb Wing took a break from their normal duties May 22 to participate in a base wide sports day. The activity was designed to improve team work and promote the Air Force's Fight to Fight mission. The sports day consisted of a variety of team sports that took place at many of Barksdale's Services facilities. More than 450 Airmen and their families weaved in and out of base housing in a 5k marathon. Medals were given to the first, second, and third place winners in three age brackets. At the completion of the run members of the wing gathered at the athletic field outside the base fitness center while Col. Robert Wheeler, 2d Bomb Wing commander, spoke about the day's festivities. "It's a good day to have some fun, a good day to blow off some steam, and a good day to be together as a team other than in the work environment," he said in his opening remarks. Following Colonel Wheeler's energetic words there were numerous other events that squadrons could participate in throughout the day such as; a dump truck pull, a mile relay, paint ball, bowling, dodge ball, tug-a-war, flag football, and basketball. A picnic and raffle drawing culminated the day's events. The event proved to be a success with more than 1500 individuals and team members participating. "It was a huge success being that it was the first sports day; since I have been here," said Staff Sgt. Angelia Cain, the fitness programs director for the past four years. The success of the event created future possibilities for another sports day. "I have heard comments," said Sergeant Cain, "people are always saying there is nothing to do. We can show people that being fit means you can have fun too." "We'd like to do this again," Colonel Wheeler said, "We'll see how this one works out. I'll take the feedback from folks, if they liked it, if they didn't like it, what they thought we could do differently, and then we'll go from there."
