French Lt. Gen. Gilles Desclaux, France's commander in chief of air defense and air operations, visited Barksdale January 25 to 28 on behalf of the 8th Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Robert J. Elder, to discuss ongoing operations and to fly in a B-52.

"France as a country is considering participating back in with NATO operations so this gave us a window of opportunity to present new and upcoming issues with France," said Col. West Anderson, 8th Air Force headquarters chief of staff.

France is one of five countries containing nuclear weapons or capabilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The meeting between the two generals and various members of their staff gave them the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding current nuclear operations, the direction of the Air Force along with with global strike command, and simply to get more familiarization between their countries.

"(The meetings) improved relations and understanding between the two countries as far as military operations in the strategic role and air defense and air operations," said Colonel Anderson.

But the visit was not all meetings. After receiving training from life support and a check-up from flight medicine, General Desclaux climbed into a B-52 for his much awaited sortie. After which, he said he was impressed with the capabilities of the B-52 complimenting the modern modifications and variety of payloads it is capable of.

General Desclaux also toured numerous Barksdale facilities ranging from the base gym to the munitions storage area during his visit and had the opportunity to experience Ark-La-Tex cuisine.

Before leaving, he said he appreciated the warm welcome and all the accommodations made for him and his staff. He then extended an invitation for General Elder to come out and visit France to continue discussions, said Colonel Anderson.
