Spouses group brings angels to Barksdale Published May 29, 2009 By Senior Airman Alyssa C. Miles 2d Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- The Barksdale Enlisted Spouses Group will distribute Angel Food Ministries orders at the 2d Logistics Readiness Squadron warehouse June 29. All those with a Department of Defense identification card are eligible to place an order. However, the ministry's target audience is those who may need financial assistance. AFM is a non-profit, non-denominational organization that is dedicated to helping families by boxing up fresh and frozen food items and selling the packages for an affordable price. AFM has visited Barksdale in December of 2007 and 2008 and has made more than 450 total deliveries to Airmen stationed here. Joseph Wingo, AFM chief executive officer, says the ministry has grown since its beginning 15 years ago. "In 1994, we started off feeding about 34 people a month from our back porch," said Mr. Wingo. "Now, we spend $12 to $15 million a month feeding more than 545,000 people across 35 states." The AFM menus change each month and contain both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of around $60. Overall, one unit of food can feed a family of four for a week or an individual for almost a month. Additionally, all orders must be placed online at www.angelfoodministry.com.
