Tuesday Barksdale hosted its 2009 Combined Federal Campaign kickoff breakfast.

The CFC is the world's largest annual workplace charity campaign, working hand-in-hand with the United Way. The CFC was established in 1961 to promote philanthropy by providing a focused, cost-effective fund-raising effort to federal employees.

This year's main point of contact is Maj. Walter Gibbins, 2d Civil Engineering Squadron, Operations Flight commander.

"I see this as an opportunity to give back to the local community and repay the debt of gratitude to a few of the organizations that have helped me get where I am today," said Major Gibbins. "As federal employees, we are servants and I feel I need to give back."

Each unit has a representative they can contact to make a contribution. All have volunteered for different reasons.

"We are ambassadors in blue, this is just one of many ways that we can help out the community," said Master Sgt. Lacy Beanblossom, 2d Maintenance Squadron.

There are approximately 2,400 non-profit organizations supported by the CFC here at Barksdale and across the globe.

"Giving isn't just about helping civilians, many of our own receive assistance from the various organizations participating," said Major Gibbins. "Local, regional and national organizations are among the organizations on the list. Barksdale's own Youth Center and the Hap House, to name a few, are on the list of local agencies."

The Barksdale campaign runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 27.

Airmen have the opportunity to have an impact on thousands of people in need by contributing to the CFC. Airmen can make a difference, whether it be helping children and youth, fighting diseases or feeding senior citizens.
