Focus on Sustainability and Energy Efficiency wins Air Force Federal Energy Awards Published Oct. 8, 2009 By Staff Reports BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La -- Innovative energy conservation efforts at three Air Force bases are being recognized by the Department of Energy. Energy leaders from Barksdale, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, and Kadena Air Base, Japan, are the 2009 Federal Energy and Water Management Award winners and will be honored during receptions in Washington, DC in late October. Combined, their efforts saved the Air Force more than $2.2 million and enough energy to power 4,243 homes for one year. Barksdale's Civil Engineer Squadron's Utility Intensity Reduction Program reduced energy more than seven percent in 2008 by implementing numerous projects focusing on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and lighting systems. Time scheduling and temperature controls in environmental management control systems were utilized. Boilers and hot water heaters were optimized and upgraded with more efficient units. Thousands of feet of water and refrigerant lines were insulated. Leading technologies in fluorescent lighting were used to replace obsolete, inefficient lighting systems. These efforts saved Barksdale more than $595 thousand in utility savings for 2008 compared to 2007.
