Barksdale Airmen and their families spent their Saturday morning delivering Christmas cheer to veterans at the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Hospital, Dec. 19.

More than one hundred Christmas cards were collected by the Barksdale Enlisted Spouses Group from the base and local community during the past month and hand delivered by volunteers to more than 70 patients at the VA Hospital.

"We know many of the patients may be having a hard time, especially with the holidays coming up," said Rachel Penwell, president of BESG. "We wanted to make this Christmas season a little brighter for them, especially since they have given so much to our country."

When Mrs. Penwell sent out the call for volunteers she had no idea how overwhelming the response would be, with more than 70 volunteers turning out to make deliveries.

"I know this type of event hits close to home for active duty and their family members, but I was personally amazed and impressed at the volunteer turnout," she said.

For many volunteers this was an opportunity to visit, learn and share stories with the men and women who served before them.

"I think it is not only important for them to have someone come see them, but for us as Airmen to visit with them and be a part of the community," said Senior Airman Dolores Spedicato, 2d Medical Group pharmacy technician. "Having someone bring them a few Christmas cards really brightened their day. One gentleman was too weak to talk but he had a huge smile on his face, it really made my heart happy to see him smile."

The patients benefited from the visit as well.

"As I floated around to each floor I saw many patients having conversations with the Airmen," said Mrs. Penwell. "For many of the veterans this was the only time they would have someone personally come see them during their hospital stay. Many of the veterans I spoke with were so grateful for the company."

The BESG says there will be more volunteer opportunities with the VA Hospital to come in the near future.

"The BESG decided to start working and volunteering with the Maternity Support Program, a new program that the VA is trying to get started," said Mrs. Penwell. "We are very much looking forward to working with that program after the first of the year."
