Firefighter for a day Published Sept. 22, 2011 By Senior Airman Chad Warren 2nd Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Airmen from Barksdale will get the chance to compete in several firefighter related events during the 2nd Bomb Wing Fire Muster here Oct. 14. Members of the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Emergency Services Flight are hosting the event to help spread the message of fire safety while showing the rigors of firefighting with a fun activity during National Fire Prevention Week. "The Fire Muster simulates the challenging task that firefighters perform during an operation," said Staff Sgt. Steven O'Brien, 2 CES Fire Emergency Services Flight. "It allows Airmen to enjoy some friendly competition and experience first-hand the physically demanding job of a firefighter." Participants must register as teams of five Airmen. Registration is open to 16 teams on a first-come, first-served basis. Team members must provide their own combat helmets and work gloves, and must be wearing J-list gear and combat boots to compete. The competition will be held in the Base Exchange north parking lot beginning at 8 a.m. The course consists of five fire-fighting specific events, with each team member completing one event in a relay style format. There is also a new individual "Backdraft Bull" competition where one Airman completes all five events solo. Though there have been three previous Fire Muster competitions hosted by the 2nd Mission Support Group, this will be the first competition open to the entire wing. Participants may register until Oct. 1 by contacting 2 CES Fire Emergency Services at 456-2642.
