Plan ahead. That's the advice being given to Barksdale drivers in the coming months.

With the closure of the West Gate due to ongoing construction and renovation projects, Team Barksdale members are experiencing longer waits getting on base through other gates.

According to Tech. Sgt. Thomas Hollis, 2nd Security Forces Squadron Police Services NCO in charge, the closure has caused an increase in traffic during already high-volume traffic times - morning and afternoon rush hours and lunch time.

"Security forces advises base personnel to utilize alternate installation gates during this time, stagger reporting times and plan ahead to avoid being late for work or any appointments," he said.

Additionally, to alleviate congestion, 2 SFS has posted more personnel at the gates during the high volume traffic times, said Larry Tusing, Department of the Air Force police officer. By doubling the amount of gate guards during rush hour, the traffic flow has been improved considerably, he said.

In addition to having more guards check ID cards at the West Gate, Tusing said they've also placed an officer at the stop light near the North Gate entrance to help speed up the flow of traffic there.

"The West Gate will be reopened once the overhang work is complete," said Eric Tilstrom, 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron Programs Flight chief. "The scheduled completion date is late summer, but the gate may be able to open to traffic sooner."

Although an inconvenience, the nearly $415,000 project will provide gate guards cover from the elements and give the main gate at Barksdale a more professional appearance.
