The 2nd Munitions Squadron competed in the 2012 Global Strike Challenge on Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Aug. 28.

For the competition, the 2 MUNS munitions maintenance team built various types of bombs while being graded on their performance in different areas.

"We were timed and evaluated on how fast we could build 18 GBU-31 version 1 bombs and six GBU 31 version 3 bombs without any major defects, and, we also had a 42 Mrk-82 bomb trailer build," said Tech. Sgt. Frederick Currie, 2 MUNS munitions maintenance team chief. "Our job is to make sure the bombs are ready to go for the load team."

The 11-person team, hand-selected by their superiors, was evaluated in various areas of the bomb build-up to include technical order usage, proper equipment configuration and basic safety procedures.

Several hours of training went into preparing the team for the challenge.

"We began training the second week in July," said Currie, "We started building the munitions, timing ourselves and checking the munitions."

The team was created with Airmen of varying skill sets and experience needed to complete the competition.

"There are different elements within the squadron and we all come together to complete a common mission to include working on the trailers and working in weapons storage," said Currie.

The 2 MUNS Airmen have trained long and hard and plan to continue their reign as champions.

"I think we are doing awesome," said Currie. "I feel we have done an excellent job, and I am very proud of the team."
