The Barksdale Exceptional Family Member Program family support team sponsored a trip to a local farm located in Claiborne Parish, on land that has deep roots of family farming history dating back to the late 1800s.

Families were treated to a hay ride to the farm animal-petting area where they were able to pet and hold baby animals, milk a dairy cow, feed adult animals and plant a row of corn.

“Farmer Dan made sure that every child received a hands-on experience and the kids loved it,” said Ana Brown, EFMP Coordinator.  “He shared a few basic facts of each animal, along with a geography and history lesson with the Louisiana Hay Maze.”

After lunch, the children were invited to ride the cow train, a horse or a Shetland Pony.

“It was a highlight of the day for many of the children, even the three and four year olds were eager to ride,” said Sherri Kitchens, EFMP Coordinator.  “It was a beautiful, sunny day and I think one of the most important parts of the tour was that we got witness and experience the aesthetic value of the rolling hills, pastures, trees and a working farm.”

EFMP offers monthly activities. Camp Gator is coming up on June 2, 2018 and all EFMP families are invited to attend.  If you have any questions, please contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 456-8400.
