With the winter season quickly approaching, Airmen and their families should be preparing for the coming low temperatures, wind chills, snow, ice and more.

The 2nd Bomb Wing safety office provided a few tips to help make it through this winter safely.

  • In case you lose power or heat in your home, have a home safety kit that includes non-perishable foods, medicine, flashlights and candles with matches.
  • Make sure your car has adequate antifreeze.
  • Make sure tires have good tread and are inflated to the right pressure.
  • In case of an emergency, have these few items stored in the car: a set of jumper cables, non-perishable food, a flashlight with extra batteries and a cell phone.
  • Stay warm by wearing several layers of loose fitting, lightweight clothing. Entrapped air warmed by body heat is the best protection from the cold.

"We do experience freezing weather in the ArkLaTex, however, there is plenty of lead time and it normally doesn’t last long," said Richard Knowles, 2BW ground safety officer.  “Drive defensively and take your time.” Barksdale does not have the resources to remove snow accumulation and the opening or closing of the base will be determined by wing leadership contingent on road and weather conditions, Knowles added.
