Barksdale raised recycling awareness in support of the national initiative of America Recycles Day to keep America beautiful Nov. 15.

The 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron installation management flight set up a booth at the Exchange to interact with patrons and provide informational flyers and collection bins.

“We try to promote recycling every year around Arbor Day and America Recycles Day,” said Alfredo Garza III, 2nd CES recycling manager. “The main goal is to inform everyone that there are recycling opportunities on base.”

Team Barksdale recycled more than 250 tons of cardboard last year through the 62 recycling containers distributed around the base. There is also a recycling center located next to the commissary that 2nd CES encourages Team Barksdale to use.

The Recycling Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Our team is constantly looking for opportunities to accept new types of recyclable items,” said Garza. “All of the items Team Barksdale recycles come back to the base to be used here again.”

The base accepts more than 45 different types of recyclable materials. Examples include industrial items such as scrap metal, aluminum, steel, brass, copper, lead and acid batteries.

Garza says a common item that a lot of people throw away is water bottles.

“People often forget that these can and should be recycled,” said Garza. “Some people have the mentality they don’t need to recycle. They think it’s not their problem, but they forget that it will affect future generations, like their children and grandchildren.”
