BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Military members are familiar with moving to new duty locations and the Traffic Management Office becomes their go-to place for assistance with this process.
Any member who is moving inbound or outbound of Barksdale should go to TMO for help. TMO offers customer service and provides necessary paperwork needed to have personal property shipped.
“Moving your personal property and family can be one of the biggest stressors during a move,” said Tech. Sgt. Kristal Trumble, 2nd Logistics Readiness Squadron chief of personal property. “We assist members with making sure they are aware of their responsibilities and things they can do to ensure their move is smooth.”
TMO also helps with personal procured moves. PPM moves allow eligible members to be reimbursed by the government for moving their belongings themselves.
For members who are making their first or last move, a briefing is required.
Any members who have moved duty locations before or are not separating or retiring, they are asked to complete self-counseling through a system called the Defense Personal Property System.
Once the member’s shipment is booked, the member will be notified and a carrier will be assigned to their shipment.
When members arrive to their destination, they may have their property delivered directly to their home. For members who don’t want direct delivery to their home, they are authorized storage for up to 90 days.
To ensure household goods and property are not damaged during travel, TMO provides quality assurance inspectors.
“The inspectors check the carrier to make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing by contract,” said Trumble. “The inspectors will also be available as a representative to assist and answer any questions the member may have.”
For members who wish to ship their pets, they must ensure their pets are up-to-date on all vaccinations. Members are responsible for all expenses related to pet shipment and must comply with carrier regulations.
“It is important for members to come in and talk to us as early as possible so they have a chance of getting pet space on the rotator flight,” said Airman 1st Class Nils Dillmann, 2nd Logistics Readiness Squadron passenger travel clerk.
The hours for TMO have recently changed for the summer months. The new hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
