More than 600 Airmen, retirees, dependents and members of the local community took a scenic run across Barksdale Sept. 21, 2013.

The Barksdale Half Marathon and 5k run was hosted by the 2nd Force Support Squadron and was the first one open to the public.

Before and after the marathon, two B-52H Stratofortress bombers, inert munitions, a fire truck, and an emergency ordnance disposal truck were on display. Participants were able to speak with Airmen and take a closer look at the vehicles and equipment they use.

"We had several organizations on and off base along with 50 volunteers working together to make the event a success," said Lt. Col. Diane Benavidez, 2nd FSS commander.

The half marathon consisted of a 13.1 mile route that started at the flightline, weaved through base housing to the reserve side of base, and finished back on the flightline.

To prepare for the half marathon many participants trained months in advance.

"I've been on temporary duty at Keesler Air Force Base, so to prepare for the marathon I've been running on the beach for the past few months," said Master Sgt. Shaun Piernes, 307th Bomb Wing telecommunications specialist. "During the run I stayed motivated by listening to music and tracking my pace."

Barksdale also hosted a 5k in conjunction with the half marathon.

"The event was good way for participants stay physically fit, blow off steam and build camaraderie," said Benavidez. "Airmen from the Airman Leadership School came out and ran together with their class flag."

The next Barksdale Half Marathon is projected for September 2014, however members of Team Barksdale can participate in an upcoming 5k on Oct. 11.

"Don't worry about the distance, the hardest part about running is starting," said Piernes. "In the end it feels amazing when you cross the finish line."
