Every Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m., Barksdale's Fox Run Golf Course offers an opportunity to socialize and relax after a hard day's work with "cook your own steak" night.
The program, started last year, has been continued this year due to its popularity, said Larry Busch, golf course general manager.

Customers can get either steak or chicken with a baked potato, salad, roll and a soft drink.

The basic steak is a ribeye and costs 12 dollars. Customers can substitute the ribeye for a filet for an additional three dollars. A chicken meal runs nine dollars and there is a hot dog plate available for children for two dollars and 50 cents.

For the customers, it's a good value.

"I've been attending steak night since its inception and it is a fantastic deal," said Chief Master Sgt. Steve Stakes, 2d Operations Group Superintendent.

It's also a great opportunity to socialize with some great people and support the Services Squadron and golf course, Chief Stakes said.

Steak night was started last year as a way to increase funds at the golf course's snack bar, Mr. Busch said. Since the golf course is a non-appropriated funds benefit for base personnel, all operating and maintenance costs need to be generated by the course itself, he added.

The process for customers is a simple one.

Customers pick up their steaks inside the snack bar and take it out to the grill. There's a table with a variety of spices to season steaks and then it's tossed on the grill. Once the steak is prepared to their liking, the customer takes it inside and to get the rest of their plate put together.

For those that don't like to cook or are unsure of how to properly cook a steak, help is available.

"Mike Meridith stands out at the grill and gives a hand to the customers that need it as well as for safety reasons," said Mr. Busch.

The customers agree having someone on-hand is helpful.

"Mike is a great help to those of us who don't cook," Chief Stakes said.

Even with the popularity of steak night, there is never a long line at the grill.

"Most of the customers come in groups throughout the evening and our grill is pretty large so there is never much of a wait even though we get 20 to 30 customers a night," Mr. Busch said.

With the weather getting warmer every day, customers can enjoy their dinner on the patio.
"Since daylight savings time has given us a little more light, there is time to play a quick nine holes of golf after work and enjoy a nice steak dinner on the way out," said Mr. Busch.
