A new bulk waste disposal policy is in place for residents of base housing.
Bulk waste is any large item that will not fit in the garbage can provided to residents. This includes furniture, large boxes and discarded playground or lawn equipment. Hazardous waste and tires are not included in this category and are not permitted to be disposed of through base trash services.

The current garbage pickup for base housing is; Tuesdays, all main base homes, and Fridays, for Capehart and Heritage Heights.

The Landings at Barksdale and J&J Disposal have added an extra day of trash pick up on the first Wednesday each month for bulk waste from the housing areas. A large dumpster behind the maintenance facility located at 320 Rickenbacker may be used between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for bulk disposal.

"We have received complaints from the 2d Civil Engineering Squadron [housing office] about residents dumping bulk waste in several non-housing dumpsters, as well as the dumpsters located at the base recycling center," said Dreamer Wood, community manager for main base.

"We had a problem with residents putting unauthorized items in our dumpsters, but we have no control over who uses it," said Master Sgt. James Mitchel, NCOIC of chapel operations at chapel one.

"Through partnering sessions with the base leadership and the Government Housing Office we have taken extra efforts to notify the residents of the services we provide in this area," said Ms. Wood.

An additional bulk waste disposal service was added to the once a month pick up in order to assist residents in getting rid of their bulk items in the middle of the month.

Residents are strongly encouraged to make use of these extra services to prevent any type of possible repercussions as a result of improper disposal.

"Housing residents should not put bulk waste at the curbside because this creates an unsightly image to our housing area," said Ms. Wood. "We will take the effort to contact residents and ask them to take the bulk waste to our dumpster on Rickenbacker, relocate their bulk waste to an appropriate area near their trash cart storage area."
