Barksdale's Defense Reutilization Marketing Office provides an official way to turn in unused government property.

The two-manned operation's purpose is to keep and maintain accountability of all turn-in material on base along with support with the turn-in of unserviceable property.

After restructuring in the late 1990s, Barksdale's DRMO supports the efforts of DRMO Texarkana in Texarkana, Texas. The guideline of what is accepted varies depending on the condition of the material.

"In order to help the Air Force defray transportation cost, we came up with an agreement between DRMO Texarkana and Barksdale to help support with the turn in of unserviceable property," said Larry White, disposal service representative. "The unserviceable property is downgraded to scrap based on its dollar value on base."

Barksdale's DRMO only accepts material that no longer holds value as its original purpose. The most common items they are given are desks, chairs and file cabinets.

Whether a unit needs to turn in rolling stock of large, heavy items, old office furniture or computer equipment, DRMO knows where to direct its customers.

"The turn-in process is very easy," said Senior Airman Brentt Smith, 2d Communication Squadron wireless communication technician. "I stop by base supply to receive paperwork for accountability of the assets and once it is filled out I can drop everything off at DRMO whether it is scrap wire or desks. It is a really quick process with no hassle. They make it very easy."

To make the turn-in process simpler, Mr. White urges the use of the DRMO Web site; www.DRMS.dla.mil. The Web site instructs users in step-by-step details what is required to turn-in government property.

"We encourage customers to use electronic turn-in documents," said Mr. White. "The process is easier because we are able to same day review what you have submitted electronically. We can then approve or make different changes on the document and reaffirm that all the information and documentation for a successful turn in is there. It makes the turn in process a lot easier and quicker."

On the Web site, users can also find a list of condition codes and printable labels which are needed for labeling a turn-in.

Barksdale policy mandates that anything that is to be turned into DRMO must go through base supply prior to drop off. The Barksdale DRMO is open between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and is located next to the base equipment rental.
