2d Maintenance Group change of command

The director of logistics and mission support here for the past two years took command of the 2d Maintenance Group June 2 in a change-of-command ceremony at Hoban Hall. 

Col. Charles Johnson succeeds Col. Steven Shinkle, who is retiring to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, to work at Cooper High School as the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps commander after 34 years of military service. 

Colonel Johnson has served in multiple capacities at logistics and mission support, including being responsible for logistics, installations and mission support for nine wings, as well as overseeing all logistics programs for 8th Air Force. Colonel Johnson was also responsible for developing procedures and training for various munitions as well as leading exercise and contingency logistics planning for 8th Air Force and overseeing base infrastructure and security at 8th Air Force installations. 

Colonel Johnson began his Air Force career as a stratotanker branch officer-in-charge and has served in a variety of maintenance positions at squadron and group levels on both fighter and bomber aircraft, and has also been a squadron maintenance officer for both types of aircraft. He has also served as a staff officer at Strategic Air Command and Air Combat Command as well as serving as a maintenance squadron commander three times and has experience on KC-135, B-52, F-16, F-15, B-1 and B-2 aircraft. 

Colonel Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1982. In 1990, he attended Squadron Officer School and earned a Master of Science degree in aerospace management from Embry-Riddle University, Fla., in 1992. He attended Air Command and Staff College in 2000 and Air War College in 2002. In 2004 Colonel Johnson earned his Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. 

He was commissioned through Officer Training School in August 1985. He was a distinguished graduate of both the Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course and Air Command and Staff College. 

During his 24 years of service, Colonel Johnson has earned a Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with valor device and three oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award and Iraq Campaign Medal.
