Dorm mold remediation underway Published Sept. 17, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Joe C. Boals 2d Bomb Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Over the summer, mold spread through dormitory Buildings 4640 and 4650. After evaluating the situation, 2d Bomb Wing leadership authorized residents to relocate while the situation is resolved. "It started when we had Airmen with mold in their rooms," said dorm resident, Airman 1st Class Glenn Giron, 2d Force Support Squadron. "We notified dorm managers and first shirts. They then checked other rooms and rooms of deployed Airmen. We worked with dorm managers and first sergeants to perform a mold clean-up." Dorm management has been working with both 2d Medical Group's bioenvironmental and contractor mold professionals on the best options for Airmen living in these conditions. "Mold removal contractors have been working with us for the past few months," said Staff Sgt. Steve Hourihan, 2d Civil Engineer Squadron unaccompanied housing manager. "They have inspected the buildings and found the issue to be in the heating ventilation and air conditioning. Bioenvironmental has also evaluated the mold and found that it is no health threat." A town hall meeting was held Sept. 10 and 11 to inform dorm residents on the mold situation and the actions being taken. More than 140 senior ranking Airmen in the dorms were selected to be moved off base. Out of the 142, 45 residents either have already moved out or have received orders to move. The remaining Airmen from the affected dorms must complete dorm relocation paperwork by Oct. 1 and to vacate by Oct. 30. The buildings will then be closed down to take necessary steps to remediate the mold.
