The Breast Cancer Awareness Month remembrance tree. The tree will be placed in different locations on base throughout the month of October. Anyone with a family member or who knows someone who had breast cancer is welcome to fill out a card to be hung on the tree. Breast Cancer Awareness: Mammograms key to early detection

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- The 2d Medical Group is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One-in-eight women either has, or will develop, breast cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that today, if detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 90 percent.

Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million American women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram. There is no reason to be part of this statistic. This screening is available free of charge, and usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

We are fortunate to have a new and highly skilled mammography technician with more than 23 years of experience on staff. Sharon Grubbs will do everything she can to ensure you have the best mammogram experience possible. If you have been putting off having your mammogram until you could have it done on base, now is the time.

Tricare Prime beneficiaries over 39 years of age are entitled to a mammogram screening once a year. Mammograms are appropriate for women with no history of breast cancer or other breast health problems. Women who currently have symptoms or have noted a lump should see a health care provider for examination before a mammogram or other testing is done.

Non-active duty Tricare beneficiaries may also choose to schedule a mammogram with a network mammography provider of their choice without a referral or pre-authorization. Beneficiaries will need to obtain their prior films to take with them and a doctor's note with a fax number so results can be forwarded to the Primary Care Manager.

Women 40 and older who haven't had a mammogram in more than 12 months, or have never had one should not wait a moment longer. Call 456-6253 or come by the Radiology Department on the first floor of the 2d Medical Group to make an appointment today.
