Months of continuous preparation, long hours and intense exercises paid off as the 2d Bomb Wing completed its Conventional Operational Readiness Inspection Dec. 13 with an overall grade of 'satisfactory.'

The Air Combat Command Inspector General Office conducted the CORI to test the Mighty Deuces' ability to rapidly deploy equipment and Airmen showing its preparedness and war fighting capability.

"I witnessed a tremendous sense of pride from the 2d Bomb Wing during this inspection," said Col. Leonard "Mad Dog" Moskal, ACC IG team chief, during the outbrief. "Additionally the level of professionalism was the best I've seen in the two years I've been part of the IG team."

The 2d BW demonstrated its capability to deploy more than 600 Airmen with 350 short tons of equipment and five aircraft to Base X, a simulated forward operating location, to conduct a wartime mission. The Phase I CORI is an evaluation of the unit's capability to transition from peacetime readiness to a wartime posture. During this inspection, the wing was evaluated on many areas including initial response to a crisis, aircraft generation, deployment of Airmen, cargo and aircraft, and regeneration of the bombers at a deployed location.

"This week I truly witnessed perseverance and greatness," said Col. Steven Basham, 2d BW commander. "I observed, with great pride, active duty and civilians, Airmen both, giving their all to ensure mission success. Having gone 10 years without a CORI Phase I, the odds were against us. Not only did we beat the odds, we excelled beyond belief."

The CORI was preceded by three exercises to help prepare for the inspection. The 2d BW also conducted multiple exercises throughout the year to sharpen its Airmen's ability to smoothly generate aircraft, deploy its forces to conduct a war fighting mission, and then regenerate aircraft at the simulated deployed location.

"All preparations and training which began in January and continues to this day have paid incredible dividends for this CORI," said 1st Lt. Aaron Hughes, installation deployment officer. "The ability to learn, train and execute the mission as a focused team each time is invaluable. I believe the COREs in January through March of this year helped lay a great foundation and process for us to build to the level of excellence we are at now."

Barksdale was the last of 70 inspections conducted by the ACC IG team in 2009.

As a dual mission capable wing, the 2d BW continuously maintains focus on both conventional and nuclear missions. This CORI was the wing's final conventional inspection before it falls under the newly created Air Force Global Strike Command.

The inspection solidified that the 2d BW is second to none and many areas earned the players high grades to include 45 superior performers and 21 superior performing teams who were recognized for their outstanding contributions.
