BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. - Barksdale's Airman's Attic provides an opportunity to Airmen to get household goods in times of need. Airmen and their families are able to browse and take home whatever donated items they need.

Unlike thrift and department stores, everything at the attic is free for junior enlisted.

The Airman's Attic receives donations of all kinds including adult and childrens' clothing, uniforms, furniture, household items, electronics and food.

"We accept everything excluding flammable and perishable items," said Stefanie Markin, Airman's Attic manager and volunteer. "Clothing that is donated must be gently used with no stains or tears."

A shed on the side of the building was built this past summer so people would be able to drop off donations at their own convenience, she said.

With holidays approaching and the Red River Dining Facility closed for renovations many more Airmen are utilizing the facility, especially the free food section.

"I like to come here because they have everything I need," said Airman 1st Class Jonathan Valdez, 2nd Engineer Squadron. "I live in the dorms and since the DFAC closed it's been financially helpful to get food items here."

The Airman's Attic, managed by the Barksdale Top III, is requesting donations of non-perishable food items to help base junior-enlisted who utilize the facility.

Although only open for E-4s and below during regular hours, all ranks are allowed to get uniforms at any time. And base Airmen and their families are invited to utilize the attic during the last week of every month.

The Airman's Attic is located in the old clothing sales building on the corner of Wilbur Wright Road and Kenney Avenue. It's open Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
