The 101 Critical Days of Summer are rapidly approaching. Traditionally one of the most dangerous times of year for Air Force personnel, the 101 Critical Days begins Memorial Day weekend and concludes at the end of the Labor Day weekend.

Every year, during this time frame, our Air Force loses valuable people to various types of off-duty mishaps and accidents. These irreparable losses affect the member's family, friends and their units forever. Keep in mind, it is over 16 times more dangerous for Air Force members to engage in off-duty activities than to be in a combat zone--a sobering statistic.

Time and again, mishap investigations and statistical analysis have shown most of these mishaps could have been prevented had the individuals utilized the Wingman Concept or risk management techniques to minimize - or preferably eliminate - the risk altogether.

During the 101 Critical Days of Summer, the same risk management tools you use on-duty can minimize the chance you or someone else will needlessly fall victim to hazards off duty. When assessing the personal risk management of off-duty activities apply the principles of ACT:
· Assess the situation
· Consider your options
· Take appropriate action

Apply the ACT principles in all you do. When traveling, for example, prepare yourself mentally and physically for the task with adequate rest prior to starting a drive to your favorite vacation spot. When riding your motorcycle, use proper personal protective equipment and ride within your skill level. Know your limitations and don't take unnecessary chances.

You and your family are important to me. Staying safe and healthy is critical to the Barksdale mission. By employing risk management techniques, pacing yourself and knowing your limitations, you will be able to make the most of summer activities and reduce the likelihood of injury or death. Manage risk everyday!
