2nd MSG welcomes new commander

The 2nd Mission Support Group welcomed a new commander during a change of command ceremony at Barksdale, July 10, 2020. With their masks donned, audience members watched as Col. Randy Whitecotton assumed command of the 2nd MSG from Col. Sara Ann Custer. Col. Michael Miller, 2nd Bomb Wing commander, officiated the ceremony and led the symbolic change of leadership by the passing of the 2nd MSG guidon from the outgoing commander to the incoming.

Planes don’t fly without fuel

Barksdale Airmen take care of the mission, but who takes care of the base? The unit responsible for the sustainment and maintenance of $5.9 billion worth of infrastructure on the installation is the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron operations flight.

2nd SFS switch to M18

More than 30 years ago, the M9 Beretta entered service into the military, but on November 30, the 2nd Security Forces Squadron will arm up with the M9 for the final time. Instead, they will begin carrying the M18 Modular Handgun System, a shorter, more compact weapon. The change is expected to enable defenders to complete their jobs more efficiently and effectively, according to the 2nd SFS Combat Arms team.

Col. dePyssler’s service commemorated with building dedication

The life-long service of a military veteran has been forever memorialized following the renaming and dedication of the 2nd Mission Support Group building at Barksdale during a ceremony on November 8, 2019. Retired Col. Steven L. dePyssler, director of military retiree affairs for Barksdale, served 38 years on active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the Air Force. He has also spent the past 41 years volunteering with the retiree affairs department. He is believed to be the only known American to have served in World War II, the Korean War, the French Indo-China War, the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Vietnam War.
