COMMENTARY: Personal Growth

By Chaplain (Capt) Meade Adams 2nd Bomb Wing Chapel

Personal growth: we all desire it, we all strive for it, but how many of us feel like we’re achieving it? As we look back over the years can we trace a clear path of growth from last year? Two years ago? Five years ago? Hopefully the answer is yes, but what we want to highlight today is that growth does not happen incidentally; it happens intentionally. What steps are we taking every day to contribute to our personal growth?

First, let’s define what we mean by personal growth. Personal growth can be anything from educational advancement, spiritual development, emotional work, or any other personal goals that you may have. For example, one of the goals that my wife and I had for ourselves this year was to read more. (She is admittedly doing much better than me in this department). This is a personal growth goal that will contribute to education, personal development and just personal satisfaction. Perhaps your goal this year is to be a better husband, wife, father or mother. What steps are you taking to achieve these goals? Have we carved out time every day to spend with our kids? Have we sought out babysitters so that we can go on those date nights with our spouses?

If our growth goals aren’t mapped out intentionally they will inevitably fall by the wayside. Intentionality is the name of the game, and growth is objective. Keep growing.
