The 2008 Combined Federal Campaign has started, giving Barksdale Airmen a chance to donate to their charitable cause of choice.

During the annual campaign, which runs until November 3, federal employees and servicemembers are asked to do their part in helping charitable organizations with either a one-time donation or by establishing a payroll deduction.

CFC is the world's largest annual workplace charity campaign, working hand-in-hand with the United Way. Typically the drive raises pledges in excess of $250 million to support more than 2,400 non-profit organizations from next door to across the globe.

"Our Airmen are incredibly generous," said Col Robert Wheeler, 2d Bomb Wing commander. "During the recent hurricanes our people took the Wingman concept to heart, showing up in full force to help our neighbors make it through the storms. In essence, the Combined Federal Campaign is a way for us to be America's Wingmen."

With a goal of 100 percent contact, unit CFC project officers are busy spreading the word across the base. Of course, it's donations their requesting.

"If you don't give, who will?" said Maj. Kevin Nations, 2d Maintenance Squadron, is Barksdale's CFC project officer. "If not now, then when?"

Nations hopes Barksdale reaches the identified amount of $216,500 for this year's campaign, 10 percent higher than last year's effort.

The CFC was established in 1961 to promote philanthropy by providing a focused, cost-efficient fund-raising effort to federal employees.

Giving isn't just about helping civilians, many of our own receive assistance from the various organizations participating. According to CFC officials, approximately one in four federal employees or their dependents will benefit from a charity this year.
