6/21/2012 - BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La.-- -- Privatized housing agreements between the Air Force and various project owners require the owners to offer renters insurance to active-duty tenants at no cost. However, the coverage is not automatic. Under the standard Barksdale Air Force Base lease, the active-duty tenant is covered only if the tenant requests the owner provide the insurance.
On most leases, this information can be found in Paragraph 39. Tenants should request owner-provided insurance in writing if they want such coverage. Active-duty tenants should not be unreasonably denied such coverage if they apply. Tenants should receive at least $20,000 replacement costs coverage, and $100,000 in liability coverage. Tenants should also consider the limitations of the insurance provided and analyze whether they should consider purchasing additional insurance for damage caused by conditions not enumerated in the lease.
For example, generally, the owner is not required to cover loss resulting from certain types of water damage, theft or fire. Paragraph 39 of the lease provides further information on insurance coverage.
See a legal assistance attorney if you have any questions. Walk-in legal assistance hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:30 to11:30 am. The Legal Office can provide you with a sample renter's insurance request form that you can use if you choose to request this coverage. |
