Colonel Paul M. Fortunato is commander of the 2nd Medical Group, Barksdale Air Force Base, La. In this position, he oversees the operations of a fully accredited ambulatory clinic with aerospace medicine, dental, medical, surgical services and a one-year dental residency program. He supports the medical and dental readiness of the 2nd Bomb Wing, Headquarters Eighth Air Force, Headquarters Air Force Global Strike Command and 39 associate units, as well as growing community of 35,000 eligible beneficiaries.
Colonel Fortunato graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Mass., in 1983 and the University of Connecticut, Dental Residency program at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford, Conn., in 1984.
He initially entered active duty into the U.S. Army Dental Corps from 1987 through 1990 and remained on ready reserve status before re-entering active duty into the Air Force Dental Corps in 1997. While on active duty, Colonel Fortunato has served as a Brigade Dental Surgeon; special staff officer to the commander, 1st Infantry Division; senior post-graduate resident, Naval Post-Graduate Dental School; Chief of Dental Services; Medical Treatment Facility commander, and deputy group commander.
Colonel Fortunato has a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, two Dental Post-Graduate training certificates, holds two board certifications in Comprehensive and General Dentistry, and has a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology and a Master's degree in Strategic Studies. He has been awarded the German Armed Forces Abzeichen fur Leistungen in Truppendienst award and the Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award in 2003.
