Green Acres Middle School kicked off the Month of the Military Child with a Purple-Up Day celebration April 7, 2017.

The color purple represents all of the military branches and Purple-Up Day is an opportunity for both civilians and military members to recognize the role children have alongside their military parents in all services.

“It means a lot for us to be able to show our support and love for our military children,” said Georgette Price, military services manager. “It was also a unique experience because this year the Green Acres drumline lead our military children in a parade. It gave them a moment to shine and be in the spotlight which is our purpose for today.”

The 2nd Bomb Wing, represented by Col. Brandon Parker, 2nd BW vice commander, also communicated their appreciation to military children for the countless selfless acts they do to support their family and their Air Force family.

“Some of the most unsung heroes that we have are our military children and our military spouses,” said Parker. “For those who serve, we volunteer to do this. It’s our choice. But our children don’t have that same choice. They are born into this, and with that birthright comes an awesome responsibility. So to all of you children sitting here today, we appreciate your service and the incredible sacrifice that comes with it. We ask an awful lot of your parents and you. So on behalf of Barksdale Air Force Base, The United States Air Force and the U.S. Military, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. We couldn’t do what we do without you. You are the reason we serve, the reason we sacrifice, and we can never say thank you enough.”

Military children know that their parents have an important duty to the country and because of their support, military members can do their job. Purple-up day and the Month of the Military Child are small ways our community can say thank you to these children who truly serve alongside their parents.
